Topics of Presentations

6 Key Themes

At NAFI Summit 2023, we will be focusing on topics relevant to our CFI community. Our program will provide you with valuable information you can put to use in your aviation career immediately.

Presentations will focus on the following key topics:

What Went Wrong

A close look at accident data from instructional flights

We work in a dynamic environment. Our clients bring a wide range of experience and qualifications. We may have to work in less-than-familiar aircraft. That means not only teaching risk management, but also the constant need to identify and mitigate the risks inherent in flight training. But sometimes we miss hazards that can evolve into an accident or incident. The presentations in this theme investigate what went wrong.

Specifically, presenters from the Air Safety Institute of AOPA and the NTSB will use events that ended in tragedy to help participants learn the right lessons. They will help us turn away from “I would never do THAT” thinking to the more productive mindset of learning the right lessons to avoid repeating the mistakes in our own aviation work.

Business of Flight

Managing your own flight instruction business

Whether you own a flight school, are an independent instructor, or are thinking of starting a business, these presentations are for you. Having your own business can be fun and it can present many opportunities for learning. But being a successful pilot and flight instructor does not mean you have all the information you need to take on a business.

These presentations will help cover some of the need-to-know information so you can start and maintain your business with a clear plan for growth.

Cleared for Flight

Creating a path to success for students

Training courses, course outlines, and lesson plans are all part of the toolkit for sound flight instruction. But as you no doubt learned at the very beginning of your flight instruction work, we do not operate in a one-size-fits-all environment. People learn differently. The key to success is the ability to adapt what we know to each individual client.

We need to recognize how each individual learns, know how to evaluate their performance, and be able to adapt as needed. These presentations will help you use principles of adaptive learning to accomplish that goal.

Instructor Improvements

Tips and techniques to improve your skills as an instructor

This track is all about training the trainer. Through our knowledge, experience, mistakes, and time, we all have something to share. That reality is a key benefit of bringing everyone together at an event like NAFI Summit. Several presentations will offer opportunities to learn from others.

Whether it’s an idea about using new avionics or how to teach crosswind landings, we can use collective abilities to improve aviation training and safety.

The Wisdom of Wellness

Maintaining your health and well-being

Flight training is a tough job. Have you ever flown fatigued? Or maybe a little under the weather? Most of us have. NAFI Summit will feature some much needed tips for health and well-being that are specifically geared to a flight instructor’s challenging work environment.

Learning to create a program of comprehensive wellness for yourself will enable you to model and teach these important skills to your clients, with a fundamental benefit to safety.

Tip-Top Tech

Using new technology effectively

We are surrounded by new technology in the form of flight planning software, new avionics, engine monitors, and so much more. But however much we love our technical toys, it takes time, practice, and understanding to avoid letting technology take us into trouble.

Managing automation and other technology in a safe and helpful way requires a deep understanding of a gadget’s functions and possibilities. It also demands knowing what to do when automation is not “automating” as expected.

This track also recognizes that knowing how to manage technology involves understanding and avoiding its high potential for distractions.
